In another huge blow to the high street, Pizza Hut confirmed around half of its UK restaurants will close, leaving 1,210 workers at risk of redundancy. So I visited the nostalgic pizza chain for one last trip before 68 restaurants disappear forever.
I have to admit I went with reservations. Having not tried Pizza Hut in years since childhood birthday parties, where we overindulged on the endless ice cream and salad bar, I couldn't even remember what it tasted like, except that the pizzas are thick and doughy. However, it surprised me. It was piping hot, the tomato base was fresh and saucy, the toppings were generous, and I forgot they put the garlic powder around the crust, which adds a nice flavour.

It is never going to be the best pizza of your life, but it hits the spot, and it would be a great hangover cure. It was also ready within 10 minutes, and the customer service was friendly.
Plus, when I ordered the controversial Hawaiian pizza, the man suddenly dropped the price from £17.99 to £3.99 for a lunch combo deal with wedges, or £4.99 with a drink. The price is amazing when you can barely get anything for under a fiver now.
I was so confused at first that we went back and forth in an awkward misunderstanding a couple of times. How could the price be slashed by £13, and include a side and a drink?
But this, for me, is the issue. On first impression it looks crazily expensive for a takeaway joint, with a small 9-inch pizza advertised at £17.99.
I only found out about the deal after chatting to the friendly customer service assistant, and it wasn't advertised in the shop.

The app promotes so many deals, and figuring out the best one is like doing trigonometry. It seems like you have to jump through loopholes of ordering at certain times, at specific locations, or in bulk to not get ripped off.
When you compare that with other pizza stores like Franco Manca, where you can get larger Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas starting at £7.95, there is no competition.
Why would I pay such a high price when I could get a more authentic one for less, without having to navigate the maze of deals.
It's a shame because it's such a nostalgic UK staple, and it is tasty, but the complex pricing is sadly so off-putting.
