Under these changes, parents will now be able to disable their children's private chats with AI chatbots. This move comes at a time when the company is facing increasing scrutiny regarding children's safety.

Meta has announced that starting next year, parents will have the option to disable one-on-one chats with their children's AI characters. However, Meta's AI assistant will not be completely disabled. The company states that this assistant will only provide educational and useful information and will have built-in age-appropriate safety filters.
Changes to Instagram Rules
Meta stated that PG-13 content will now be restricted by default for teen accounts on Instagram. This means that teen users will only be able to view photos and videos that are similar to a PG-13 movie. These will not include content such as nudity, drug use, or dangerous stunts. Furthermore, children will not be able to change these settings without parental permission.
New rules will also apply to chatbots.
If parents don't want to disable all chats, they can choose to block specific chatbots. Furthermore, parents will now receive information about what their children are conversing with AI characters, although they will not be given access to the entire chat.
Questions About Teen Users and AI Chats
A recent report by Common Sense Media revealed that nearly 70% of teens use AI chatbots, and half of them do so regularly. Meta's new PG-13 rules will now apply to these AI chats as well.
However, some organizations concerned with children's online safety have expressed skepticism about these measures. They say that while Meta has made efforts to increase security, many questions remain about the impact of AI chats and children's privacy.
