Overview: Nutrition expert Manjari Chandra said that real happiness lies in the balance of our diet.

Eating junk food in a bad mood can prove to be an emotional trap for our body. Manjari Chandra suggests that in such times, stay away from processed food and adopt healthy options. The real ‘comfort food’ is that which nourishes the body and stabilizes the mind – because the real way to improve mood is not the stomach, but a balanced mind.

Healthy Food for Bad Mood: Nowadays, whenever we are in a bad mood, most people turn to their fridge or food delivery app. An attempt is made to relax the mind by eating something sweet, fried or spicy. But famous nutritionist Manjari Chandra says that this habit is as common as it can be dangerous. He told that processed or outside food can temporarily improve our mood, but in the long run it affects both mental and physical health.

The relationship between mood and food is not as straightforward as it seems.

Manjari Chandra explains that when we are sad or stressed, the balance of hormones like dopamine and serotonin in the body gets disturbed. In such a situation, junk food gives instant “comfort”, but it is only for a few minutes. After this the body is filled with tiredness, lethargy and guilt.

Processed food increases inflammation and blood sugar

Outside food is often full of excess salt, sugar and trans fat. According to Manjari, it increases inflammation in the body, which can make the mood worse. Apart from this, emotional instability increases due to fluctuations in blood sugar level.

Real happiness comes from nutrients, not packaging

To improve mood, the body needs the right vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. Green vegetables, fruits, nuts, and whole grains are foods that help maintain mental balance. “If you’re feeling down, nourish your body, not process it,” says Manjari.

What to eat and what not to eat during stress

Stay away from caffeine and sugar filled drinks when you are stressed or sad. Drink herbal tea, coconut water or fresh juice instead. Also include protein-rich foods like moong dal, cottage cheese or eggs — these help increase serotonin levels in the body.

Mindful eating also improves mood

Manjari Chandra says that food is not just for filling the stomach, but is also a medium for mental peace. Gradually, eating food without phones or TV also signals the brain that it is getting adequate nutrition. This is the real power of “mindful eating”.

Change habits, not food, to improve mood

If you feel sad or stressed frequently, it is more beneficial to take a walk, listen to music, or talk to a friend to improve your mood. Manjari says, “To be happy, it is important to give peace to the mind, not the body – and that is not found in any packaged food.”
