E-commerce shines on Diwali 2025, 24% jump in online sales, small cities become new shopping hubs

The Diwali festive season was a great one for India's e-commerce sector, with volume sales growing by 24 per cent year-on-year and gross merchandise value (GMV) growing by 23 per cent, e-commerce platform Unicommerce said. During this period, Quick Commerce app contributed the most to the growth, which recorded a 120 percent increase in order volume on an annual basis. After this the brand website registered a growth of 33 percent.

Marketplaces remained the dominant channel, accounting for 38 percent of total purchases and growing eight percent in order volume. Unicommerce said that these information are based on more than 15 crore transactions done through its flagship platform Uniware during the 25-day long festive season in 2024 and 2025.

Diwali was good for e-commerce

The Diwali festive season of 2025 was a very good one for India's e-commerce sector, where order volume grew by 24 percent, while gross merchandise value (GMV) recorded a growth of 23 percent, the company said in a statement. The top performing categories were consumer goods (FMCG), home decor & furniture, beauty & care and health & pharma. According to the statement, the contribution of second and third tier cities in the total orders was about 55 percent.

There was demand for these products

According to e-commerce company Flipkart, this year's festive season was the most important time for the platform, reflecting record engagement and strong participation across the country. Flipkart said strong trends were seen in mobiles, electronics, large appliances and fashion, and all these categories showed strong growth compared to last year. Apart from this, customers also showed keen interest in high-quality and aspirational products across different price ranges.

Prateek Shetty, Vice President, Growth and Marketing, Flipkart, said, “We have seen consistent momentum throughout the festive season, reflecting the growing confidence and optimism of Indian shoppers, supported by a stable and progressive economic environment. Shetty said that the introduction of 'GST 2.0' has further strengthened this sentiment.
