Empty bank account in one click! Increasing cyber threats from AI browser

Nowadays we use browsers on the Internet every day, but have you ever thought how dangerous an “AI-enabled browser” can be? Cybersecurity experts have warned that AI browsers could become an easy way to get into your bank account — without you ever finding out.

The matter is not new yet. For example, an AI browser called Comet was found to have a vulnerability that could have allowed hackers to extract users’ banking information and passwords through commands hidden in website pages. A test by cyber researcher group Guardio showed that the browser could navigate to a log-in page without user intervention after reading a fake financial email, and automatically fill in user credentials. Could inspire.

Experts say that AI browser technology works differently from older browsers. Where traditional browsers display data inanimately, AI browsers “help” with it — summarizing the page, summarizing tasks, creating checklists. But in this process they are not able to identify in which areas hidden cyber attacks are taking place. For example, malicious instructions may be hidden in user-visible text or HTML comments on a website — which AI takes to “summarize” and then take action on the user’s behalf.

This threat is particularly serious for banking information because these browsers can operate even when you are logged in to the bank or have an active session on the banking website. According to research, asking a browser agent to “summarize this page” can activate the process of extracting your banking password by reading hidden instructions (that we do not see) along with the content of the same page.

In this situation the common user has to understand how delicate is the balance between convenience and risk. If you’re using a browser with an “AI agent” acting on your behalf, keep the following in mind:

Do not open suspicious extensions or unknown pop-ups on the browser during your banking session.

Go to regular browser settings and turn off the “Smart Agent” or “AI Assist” options if on a banking- website.

Log out of your browser occasionally and use a dedicated browser or “new tab” for banking that does not have any add-ons.

Select a “secure network” (WiFi vs mobile data) when banking on a phone or tablet — there will be minimal risk from an AI agent when your entire log-in session on the network is secure.

After banking log-in, immediately close the browser completely or clear the tabs so that no active agent-prompt is able to capture user information.
