Chhath Puja 2025 Rules: The four-day festival of Chhath begins tomorrow, October 25th, and special attention is paid to purity and sanctity during this festival. Chhath Puja begins with Nahay Khay, and the rituals of Chhath also begin on this day. After Nahay Khay, a 36-hour fast will begin on Kharna, October 26th. During this four-day festival, the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya (Usha or Pratyusha Devi) are worshipped. According to astrology, following certain rules during Chhath Puja is considered essential. During this four-day fast, devotees not only follow strict rules but also ensure a virtuous atmosphere in the home. Let's explore the dos and don'ts of Chhath Puja…
What should not be done during Chhath Puja?
Purity is the primary requirement of Chhath Puja. The fasting person should maintain cleanliness from Nahay-Khay to Usha Arghya. Cleanliness is essential both at the place of worship and at home. Cleanliness and purity are also essential when preparing the Chhath Puja Prasad.
Only Satvik food should be consumed on all four days of the Chhath Puja fast. Even those who are not fasting should consume Satvik food. The use of salt, garlic, and onion should be avoided at home from the day of Nahay-Khay. This helps maintain positive energy in the mind and makes one feel closer to God.
Women observing the fast typically wear a new sari or dhoti with vermillion. Clothes should be simple and cotton; bright or fashionable clothing should be avoided. The essence of this fast is renunciation, penance, and purification of the mind. Avoid anger, show-off, or conflict during the puja.
The 36-hour Nirjala fast begins with Kharna during Chhath Puja, so one should maintain a calm mind. The scriptures state that following this Chhath ritual is extremely important. If you knowingly or unknowingly consume water during the fast, the puja is considered incomplete.
What should be done during Chhath Puja?
Keep the items brought for Chhath Puja clean. Wheat should be thoroughly cleaned and kept away from birds and animals, as purity is highly respected during this puja. Keep all items used in the puja, such as fruits and flowers, in a clean place.
The basket, plate, pot, and lota used in the puja should be new or completely clean. Furthermore, this is a Nirjala fast, meaning without water or food. If this is not possible due to health reasons, consult a doctor and follow a light fruit diet.
It is believed that Chhath clothes should not be torn or dirty during the fast. These are the most sacred symbols of the puja, and maintaining their purity is true devotion. During Chhath Puja, women must wear clean clothes and apply orange vermillion. This vermillion holds special significance during the Chhath festival.
Family members should remember to consume prasad or food only after the fasting person has eaten. This rule must be followed on Kharna day. Also, avoid quarreling or loud TV/music during Chhath Puja.
