A 28-year-old doctor in Satara, Maharashtra, is claimed to have committed herself. According to the media, she was earlier accused over the phone by an MP of refusing to provide a fitness certificate to an arrested individual.
The certificate would have allowed authorities to arrest the person, according to the media, and the doctor was allegedly singled out because she was from Beed area.
On Thursday night, the physician, who works at the Phaltan subdistrict hospital, was discovered hanging in a hotel room.
Since her rented home was far distant, it was stated that she had booked into the hotel close to the hospital late on Wednesday night. When hotel employees knocked on her door and she did not answer, they discovered her corpse.
A Palm Note
She accused software engineer Prashant Bankar, the son of her landlord, of mental harassment and sub-inspector Gopal Badane of continuous sexual assault in a message scribbled on her palm. Both have been charged with aiding and abetting suicide.
The doctor reportedly told an internal investigative committee that she was continuously harassed and intimidated by police officers.
She said she was harassed about crimes in her hometown of Beed and forced to change medical and post-mortem findings.
In one instance, the lady was taken away without receiving treatment after police allegedly attempted to coerce her into declaring a high blood pressure patient suitable for custody. The Deputy Superintendent of Police received a formal complaint in June, but apparently nothing was done about it.
According to Satara police, the doctor and Bankar had a five-month romance that ended badly. Police also claimed that since she often performed medical checks on detained prisoners, her contacts with the sub-inspector were related to her work at the hospital.
Right now, the sub-inspector is escaping. Inspector General Sunil Phulari said, “We have suspended him and established a special team to track down and apprehend him and the other suspect.”
Leaders in politics have called for a fast and impartial investigation. NCP leader Dhananjay Munde demanded a fast-track trial and a special investigation team (SIT), arguing that it would be a serious injustice to disregard her grievances because of her Beed ancestry. Ambadas Danve, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), also called the suicide “a case where protectors turned predators” and called for outside Satara authorities to carry out the investigation.
According to the doctor’s family, she had complained about police harassment and pressure to change reports on many occasions. Online, activist Nitin Andhale posted her claimed statement, emphasizing the severity of the intimidation and alleged inactivity that may have played a role in her demise.
The doctor’s charges and supporting documentation, including WhatsApp conversations, served as the foundation for making formal complaints under sections 64 (rape) and 108 (abetting suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to Satara superintendent of police Tushar Doshi.
To find out whether hospital officials took action on her accusations, the civil surgeon is forming an investigative panel.
According to civil surgeon Yuvraj Karape, the physician was reaching the conclusion of her second 11-month tenure after joining the hospital on contract.
Authorities are looking into all of her accusations about police meddling in post-mortems and other hospital activities, and she often remained at the hotel after late-night shifts.
