Islampur now named ‘Ishwarpur’, Central Government gives official approval

The historical town of Islampur in Sangli district of Maharashtra will now be named ‘Ishwarpur’. The Central Government has approved the proposal of the State Government and a Gazette Notification of this change will be issued soon.

According to sources, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has given its final consent after detailed review of the name change proposal and confirmation of the location. This decision has been taken on the basis of the official letter of the Union Home Ministry dated August 13, 2025.

Islampur Municipal Council had unanimously passed a resolution to change the name of the city in a meeting on June 4, 2025. After this, the Senior Postal Superintendent of Sangli and the Assistant Divisional Engineer of Central Railway, Miraj issued ‘NOC’ (No Objection Certificate) in support of the proposal.

ASI Superintendent Surveyor Tushar Vaish has written a letter to the Ministry of Science and Technology and recommended issuing a gazette notification soon.

Complete details of the change have been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Surveyor General of India, Western Region Jaipur, and Pune Directorate, so that all administrative formalities can be completed.

Minister Nitish Rane expressed happiness

Maharashtra government minister Nitish Rane has welcomed the decision to change the name of Islampur to Ishwarpur. He wrote on Instagram –

“Maharashtra’s Islampur is now Ishwarpur. It is a matter of pride for Sangli and the entire state. This decision is not limited to just changing the name, but is a major effort to preserve Hindu culture and heritage.”

He said the decision was “a historic step towards strengthening the Hindu identity” and expressed his gratitude to the central and state governments, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for it.

It is noteworthy that the issue of changing the names of cities, towns and historical places in India has been a subject of political debate for a long time. Some consider it a restoration of cultural identity, while others call it a strategy of political polarization.

The decision to change the name of Islampur to Ishwarpur is once again giving rise to this debate.
