Social Media Fraud: A sensational case of online blackmailing and fraud with the operator of a digital marketing company has come to light in the city. It is alleged that an unknown person got the company’s internet media accounts closed by repeatedly reporting them and then collected lakhs of rupees in the name of reactivating them. After the complaint was registered, Jabalpur Cyber Police has started investigating the entire matter.
According to the information, the city’s young businessman Azim Ahmed (28) runs a digital marketing company (Social Media Fraud). His company has about 96 internet media accounts, through which various organizations and products are promoted. According to the company, there are more than five crore followers on all platforms combined. Azim alleges that in the last eight months, a person has systematically targeted his account and defrauded him of approximately Rs 50 lakh.
Azim told that initially the person lodged a report by falsely accusing one of his accounts of content theft and copyright infringement. After a few days, the same person contacted through chat and demanded Rs 27 thousand in exchange for removing the report. When they refused to pay, the accused repeatedly clicked reports and got many of their accounts closed (Social Media Fraud). Seeing the company’s business suffering losses, Azim finally sent the money, after which he assured to reopen the account.
But this sequence did not stop here. The accused started targeting one account after another and kept extorting money each time through different bank accounts and UPI IDs. Till now he has done more than 15 different transactions, the total amount of which has reached lakhs of rupees.
cyber cell The inspector in-charge said that a complaint has been registered and all documents to the transaction have been sought from the victim. Police is tracking the bank accounts and digital trail of the accused (Social Media Fraud). Preliminary investigation has also revealed that this network of blackmailing may be active in other parts of the country also.
