Toxic smog has once again hit Delhi-NCR, and our children are suffering the brunt of it. The hospitals of the capital are crowded with children suffering from respiratory diseases. Doctors are worried, because this time even minor cold and cough are wreaking havoc on children and medicines are also proving to be ineffective. Why is the danger more serious this time? Doctors say that pollution is making even common virus and bacterial infections many times more dangerous this time. Lungs are becoming weak: Toxic particles (dust, PM2.5 and gases) dissolved in the air are harming children. By directly penetrating into the delicate lungs, they are weakening them from within. Immunity is eroding: The immunity of children has become so weak that they are falling sick again and again and for longer periods. Medicines are also ineffective: When the lungs are weak, even the medicines are not able to work properly. Even a minor cough does not get cured for weeks. Why are children the easiest prey? The effect of pollution on children is more than that of adults. They breathe faster: Dr. Shivraj of Bengaluru explains that children breathe faster than adults, due to which they inhale more poisonous air according to their weight. Lungs are delicate: Children’s lungs are not fully developed, hence polluted Wind damages them easily. Not only Delhi, every city is becoming a ‘gas chamber’. This problem is no longer limited to Delhi only. Even in cities like Bengaluru and Thane, asthma and respiratory diseases are being seen in children throughout the year, which earlier used to occur only in certain seasons. This is not just a cough, it is a conspiracy to reduce age! Scientific research presents an even more scary picture: Age is decreasing: According to a report of ‘Air Quality Life Index’, this poisonous air of Delhi can reduce the average age of the people living here by 8 years. It is also affecting the brain: This pollution is not only stopping the development of children’s lungs, but is also adversely affecting their memory and studies. Lifelong disease: Doctors believe that if children keep breathing such air for a long time, then diseases like asthma will not leave them for the rest of their life. What to do for prevention? (Immediate solution) Mask is necessary: Children must wear a good quality mask (N95) while going out of the house. Install air purifier at home: If possible, use air purifier with HEPA filter inside the house. Stop playing outside: Unless the air quality is very bad, prevent children from playing outside in the morning and evening or going to the park. Doctors say that these are only temporary measures. Its real solution will come only when we all together take the responsibility of cleaning our environment and air, otherwise we will be forced to give a sick future to our coming generations.
