It’s a well-known fact that the onset of Indian cinema dates back to 1913 with Raja Harishchandra. After the release of this movie the industry experienced a wave of Black and White films until 1937. Almost 88 years ago the movie ‘Kisan Kanya’ was released which gave a coloured edge to the Indian cinema. The director of the film was Moti Gidwani and it was produced by Ardeshir Irani. This film paved the way for the colourful cinema. Before this movie V. Shantaram was also working to bring this vision to the theatres. However his film got delayed due to some technical issues. As a result the 1937 release got the necessary credits. India’s first coloured film The first coloured film of India Kisan Kanya was shot in the Cinecolor filming technology. The infrastructure and techniques for the technique were imported from Germany; they were more costly and difficult to execute. The complete editing of the film required them to be sent abroad and then they were received back. Not a Box-office hit The movie was not a box-office hit in the year 1937 but it created a pathway for the coloured cinema in India. It proved that Indian cinema could also create films that included high-end technology and production. Kisan Kanya – ‘The Farmer’s Daughter’ The movie Kisan Kanya directed by Moti Gidwani had an inspirational theme. Its meaning is ‘the farmer’s daughter’ which highlights the struggles hopes and the reality of rural India. Due to the high-end cost involved in the film production not many theaters could show it to the audience. As a result it didn’t perform great and wasn’t a box-office hit in that time. Despite its low popularity its still considered the shaper of Indian cinema for bringing the vision of coloured films to the country.
