1,800 tons of firecracker waste

Gujarat's diamond city Surat has once again become an example for the entire country in terms of cleanliness. All the garbage accumulated in the city after Diwali was recycled and converted into useful things instead of being thrown away. According to officials, around 600 tonnes of garbage was collected daily in Surat during the three days of Diwali. That means in total about 1,800 tons of firecracker waste was generated. Despite such a large amount of garbage, the sanitation workers of Surat Municipal Corporation cleaned the streets and areas of the entire city very quickly, thereby maintaining the city's identity as “India's Cleanest City”.

An official said, Surat Municipal Corporation is the cleanest city in the country, and this time's Diwali was a great example of it. As soon as people burst crackers, the sanitation workers immediately cleaned the city. He further said, this Diwali, about 1,800 tonnes of additional garbage was generated in just three days. That is, people burst a lot of firecrackers and also cleaned their houses completely.

Diwali waste recycled

While on normal days around 3,000 tonnes of garbage is generated in Surat every day, this number increases significantly during festivals. Nevertheless, the Municipal Corporation ensured that the increased waste during Diwali was not just dumped but was recycled and reused. Dr. Kalpesh, Deputy Health Officer of Surat Municipal Corporation, said, the most special thing this time was that different useful things are being recycled by recycling firecrackers and Diwali waste. That means, what was earlier garbage has now become something useful.

He also told that the city's sanitation workers work continuously every day. Be it a festival or a holiday. Dr. Kalpesh said, Surat is the cleanest city in the country because the sanitation workers here remain at work every day. When the whole city is celebrating the festival, they are cleaning the roads and streets. After Diwali, this recycle model of Surat has now become an inspiring example for other cities also.
