Chhath Puja 2025, a four-day festival of folk faith, is going to start from Saturday, October 25 this year. This festival starts with Nahay-Khay on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, which is celebrated with full rituals for the next four days.

Chhath Puja

The fasting women observe a strict fast and pray for the long life of their children and the happiness and prosperity of their family. This is the only festival of Sanatan Dharma, when the rising sun as well as the setting sun is worshipped. Nirjala fast has to be observed for 36 hours, due to which it is called Mahaparva. This festival seems incomplete without Chhath songs. At the same time, Chhath songs sung in Bhojpuri and Maithili languages have always been popular among the people. Chhath songs of late folk singer Sharda Sinha have crossed the boundaries of Purvanchal and are heard all over the country and abroad.

eat satvik food

Chhath Puja starts with Nahay-Kha. On this day, fasting people take bath and consume satvik food with purity of body and mind. The devotees accept it by making Prasad of pumpkin-rice, gram dal and Arwa rice. This food prepares the body for the upcoming rigorous fasting and waterless fasting. Houses are cleaned on this day. Women decorate temples and courtyards by plastering them. The atmosphere is purified with incense, lamp and Ganga water. It is believed that Chhathi Maiya resides in the homes of her devotees from this day onwards.

scientific importance

Every rule in Chhath festival also has scientific importance. Pumpkin rice eaten on the day of Nahay-Khay is a light and nutritious food. The fiber and minerals present in it detoxify the body. This is the reason why the fasting people prepare their body for the upcoming fast by taking this food as Prasad.

The festival of Kharna will be celebrated on the next day of Nahay-Khay i.e. Sunday 26th October. On this day, devotees observe waterless fast for the whole day. Then in the evening, after sunset, offerings of kheer, roti and banana are offered to Chhathi Maiya. This Prasad is called Lohanda. It is believed that consuming Kharna Prasad removes all the sorrows of life and brings happiness and peace in the family.

History

The roots of Chhath festival are believed to be linked to Yoganagari Munger in Bihar. It is believed that Mother Sita herself started the Chhath ritual from the Sitacharan temple here. His Charan Paduka is still preserved in the temple premises. Not only this, there are 4 sacred ponds here, which are named after Lord Shri Ram’s four brothers Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughan and Lord Ram himself. Every year at the time of Chhath Puja, there is a flood of devotees in Munger. Devotees and devotees take a dip of faith on the banks of Ganga. “Chhath Maiya songs” start resonating throughout the city, which include “Kelwa ke paat par ugela suraj dev…”, “Jode-jode phalwa…”, etc.
