The dream of admission to the country's top engineering colleges will no longer be limited to just the JEE Advanced. IIT Kharagpur has taken a major decision, under which students who have performed exceptionally well in international Olympiads or won medals in national and international sports competitions will now be able to gain admission to IITs. This scheme will be implemented from the 2026 academic session. The IIT Kharagpur Senate has approved the proposal, and a special committee is now finalizing its terms and conditions.
Opportunities will be available under the SEA and SCOPE schemes.
Two schemes will be implemented under this scheme—SEA (Scholastic Excellence Admission) and SCOPE (Sports Excellence Admission). Students applying under these two schemes will not need to pass the JEE Advanced. However, they will need to have passed the 12th grade and meet the age limit as per the JEE regulations. This move aims to provide the country's brightest students, who excel in a specific field, with the opportunity to study at IIT, even if they haven't taken the JEE Advanced exam.
Guidelines May Be Released Soon!
IIT Kharagpur will soon release complete guidelines detailing how to apply, how selection will be conducted, and how available seats will be allocated. It will also detail how medals earned in Olympiads or other sports events will be verified and how coordination with JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) will be maintained.
The system could be implemented in other IITs as well.
If this system is successful at IIT Kharagpur, it could be implemented in IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and other IITs in the future. This will provide new avenues of education for students across the country and reduce their dependence on JEE Advanced. This move is great news for students who bring glory to the country through Olympiads, sports, or other talents. Now, the doors of IITs are going to open not only to students who excel in academics but also in other fields.
