Desk: Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas has once again taken a dig at Google’s monopoly. He says that the Internet is so important that it cannot be left in the hands of Google. But, they also know that their AI-enabled web browser, Comet, cannot beat Google Chrome right now. Let us tell you that Perplexity has recently launched its AI-based web browser Comet.
While sharing a video on X (formerly Twitter), Arvind Srinivas wrote, “The Internet is too important to be left in Googles hands.” That means the Internet is so important that it cannot be left in the hands of Google. This statement clearly indicates that he wants to challenge Google’s hold on the online world. Srinivas believes that Google has now become the gatekeeper of the Internet and this is reducing the scope for new innovation.
Comet has been introduced as an AI-first web browser, which not only shows search results, but also understands the user’s question and answers it with context. It claims to provide personalized results in real-time. Unlike Chrome, which is based on a traditional search and advertising model, Comet aims to make the web completely AI-native.

Interestingly, Comet is built on the same Chromium engine, which is developed by Google itself and which is the foundation of Chrome. On this many users raised questions on X. One user wrote, Sure… quick question, when are you going to make something original? That is, “How will you compete realistically when you are using Google’s engine?” The other said, You are standing on their shoulder too. That means you are also standing on its support.
Recently, Arvind Srinivas ran a poll on X in which users were asked whether they would choose Chrome or Comet. In the results, Chrome won by a slight margin. To this Srinivas replied, there is still a lot of work to be done to improve Comet… This is a good start. He admitted that it will not be easy to break Chrome’s grip, but he is ready for a long journey.
Srinivas also admitted that some of Google’s services like YouTube and Maps are almost impossible to defeat. Still, he says that other things are difficult but not impossible. He believes that Google’s search, advertising and data ecosystem has limited competition. Through Comet, they want to create a browser that can give users a freer and smarter internet experience.
