risk of heart diseases

Mumbai: Heart problems can arise suddenly and if appropriate steps are not taken in time, they can be fatal. Often people consider heart attack and cardiac arrest to be the same, whereas these two are different conditions.

In his Instagram video, Dr. Manan Vora, an orthopedic surgeon and health educator from Mumbai, has explained the difference between the two in simple language and what to do in which situation to save one’s life.

Heart attack diagnosis

What is heart attack?

According to Dr. Vora, when the blood vessels of the heart become blocked and blood cannot reach some parts, it is called heart attack. He said, ‘Heart attack is like a blocked pipe, where blood flow stops. The patient feels chest pain, dizziness and restlessness, but is still conscious and breathing.’ In such a situation, it is necessary to seek medical help immediately so that the heart can be saved from damage.

cardiac arrest status

When does cardiac arrest occur?

Cardiac arrest is completely different from heart attack. Dr. Vora has compared it to ‘sudden loss of electricity at home’. He told, ‘In cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops beating, due to which the blood flow stops completely.’ In this situation the patient immediately falls unconscious and stops breathing. The doctor said that in such a time only the use of CPR or defibrillator can save a person’s life.

What to do in an emergency?

Dr. Vora told that if someone is feeling chest pain or dizziness, then call an ambulance immediately, because it could be a heart attack. But if the person suddenly falls and is not breathing, then he is in cardiac arrest and in such a situation every second is precious. He advised to start CPR immediately and use a defibrillator if available. Correct and prompt action is the key to saving lives.

importance of awareness

Awareness about heart diseases is important

Dr. Vora stressed that knowledge and quick response are vital in heart- medical emergencies. Often deaths occur due to people’s misunderstanding or late action. Therefore, it is important to know that heart attack and cardiac arrest are two different conditions. The doctor said that with correct information and a little awareness, we can save not only our own lives but also the lives of others.
