Veteran actress Nadia Afghan recently opened up about her personal experience following the death of her father, reflecting on the traditional custom of serving food to guests at funerals. In a heartfelt Instagram reel, Nadia shared her frustrations with the societal expectations placed on families during mourning periods, particularly the emphasis on hospitality.
Recalling the day of her father’s passing, Nadia revealed that she was constantly preoccupied with ensuring that guests were properly taken care of. She mentioned that despite her grief, she found herself repeatedly asking mourners if they had eaten or if they needed anything. Her concern about the arrangements extended beyond emotional support, with her father’s colony administrator also approaching her to inquire about the logistics of food, chairs, and tents for the funeral.
Nadia expressed that the most distressing part of the entire process was the overwhelming pressure to maintain a sense of hospitality, even in such a somber moment. “It felt like I was more focused on catering to others than grieving my own loss,” she said. “It became exhausting, and I found myself wondering why this ritual of offering food at funerals has become so ingrained in our culture.”
In her post, the actress emphasized that she would prefer to have clear instructions in place for her own funeral, making it known that no food should be served to guests. She firmly stated that guests should feel free to attend or not without the added expectation of participating in a ceremonial meal.
“Let people come if they want to, and if they don’t, it’s okay. I don’t want anyone to feel obligated,” she concluded. Nadia’s candid remarks have sparked a wider conversation on the pressure surrounding funeral customs and the need for a more compassionate approach to mourning.
