Turkey Earthquake: A strong earthquake struck Turkey on Monday, causing the collapse of at least three buildings that had been damaged by an earlier earthquake. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 6.1 on the Richter scale. Türkiye’s emergency response agency did not immediately report any damage. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), the epicenter of the earthquake was in Sindirgi city of Balikesir province.

Earthquake tremors were also felt in Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa and Izmir provinces. Initial reports show that no damage has been reported. Türkiye lies on the crest of a major fault line and experiences frequent earthquakes.

Earthquake tremors since August

Türkiye is one of the countries most affected by earthquakes. Last August, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Sindiragi in the northwestern Balikesir province, killing one person and injuring dozens. Since then, small tremors have been felt in the region.

Prayer for people’s safety

In September, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye’s Balıkesir province. The disaster management authority said the earthquake, which struck the Sindirgi area of ​​Balikesir, had a depth of 7.72 kilometers (4.8 miles). Turkish President Recep Erdoğan issued a statement praying for the safety of the people. Earthquake tremors were felt in many provinces including the country’s largest city Istanbul.

More than 53,000 people died

In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged millions of buildings in 11 southern and south-eastern provinces. 6,000 people were killed in northern parts of neighboring Syria.
