Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has recommended the Central Government to appoint Justice Surya Kant as the next CJI. Justice Surya Kant is the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court after the current CJI Gavai. If the Center accepts his recommendation, then after CJI Gavai’s retirement on November 23, he will become the 53rd CJI of the country on November 24.

According to sources of a news agency, CJI Gavai has recommended to the Union Law Ministry to appoint Justice Surya Kant as the next CJI. Let us tell you that Justice Surya Kant was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. If he becomes the next CJI, his tenure as Chief Justice will be (about 1.2 years). The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years.
How is the Chief Justice of India elected?
As per tradition, a month before the retirement of the current Chief Justice, the Union Law Ministry asks the CJI for the name of his successor. As soon as the CJI announces the name of his successor, it is usually decided who will become the next CJI.
