Big news for Aadhaar cardholders. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced several important Aadhaar-related changes in 2025, which will impact over one billion people in the country.
Fees increased from October 1; updates will now be slightly more expensive.
UIDAI has increased the fee for Aadhaar updates from October 1, 2025. Now, if you want to change details like your name, address, date of birth, or mobile number, you will have to pay ₹75 (previously ₹50). Biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, or photo) will now cost ₹125, up from ₹100 previously. These new fee rates will remain in effect until 2028. UIDAI says these changes have been made to improve service quality and the cost of technological improvements.
Relief for children: Biometric updates are now free.
UIDAI has provided relief for children. Fingerprint and iris scan updates for children aged 7 to 15 will now be completely free. Previously, this required a fee. Officials say that children's faces and fingerprints change over time, making this update necessary. Schools have also been asked to assist in this process so that no child's Aadhaar is deactivated.
New Document List and Strict Rules
In July 2025, UIDAI released a new list of documents for Aadhaar updates and new enrollments. Uniform and clear rules have now been established for all Indian citizens, NRIs, OCI cardholders, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs). UIDAI has also clarified that a person can have only one Aadhaar number. If a duplicate Aadhaar is found, action will be taken.
Free update period ends, fees will now apply.
UIDAI had provided free online updates to people until June 14, 2025. But this deadline has now expired. Now, a fixed fee will be required for any update. Experts say that the free update feature may be available again for a limited period in the future, so keep an eye on the UIDAI website.
Major Changes Starting November 1: Completely Digital Update System
From November 1, 2025, UIDAI is launching a new digital update system. Under this system, Aadhaar cardholders will be able to update information such as name, address, date of birth, gender, and mobile number completely online, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar service center to correct even minor errors. The new system will automatically verify through the government database. There will be no need to upload documents or manually verify them.
Rural Areas Will Benefit
This move by UIDAI will be especially beneficial for people in villages and small towns, where previously long lines were required for updates. Now, this process can be completed from home through OTP verification via the myAadhaar portal or the UIDAI app. However, it will still be necessary to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, or photo).
