Precautions for kidney health
Kidneys are one of the important organs of our body. These not only clean the blood but also remove excess fluid and waste from the body. Over time, the kidneys can weaken, affecting their functionality. Factors such as diabetes, obesity, alcohol consumption and high blood pressure can lead to chronic kidney disease. But did you know that some of your morning habits can harm your kidneys? Chennai-based urologist Dr. Venkatasubramaniam has identified five such habits. Come, let us discuss these.
stopping urination in the morning
The bladder fills during sleep, and upon waking there is a natural urge to urinate. But holding urine for a long time puts pressure on the bladder and kidneys. This can weaken the bladder muscles, increase the risk of infection, and cause damage to kidney tissue. Doctors recommend urinating immediately after waking up.
not drinking water in the morning
Not drinking water overnight can cause mild dehydration. In this condition, the kidneys require more fluid to function properly. If you drink tea or coffee in the morning, the caffeine can cause further dehydration. Therefore, it is essential to start the day with a glass of water.
taking painkillers on an empty stomach
Many people take ibuprofen or aspirin on an empty stomach in the morning to relieve headache or body ache. According to doctors, frequent consumption of painkillers can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, increasing the risk of swelling and damage. Consuming these medicines on an empty stomach can increase chemical pressure on the kidneys.
not drinking water after exercise
Exercising in the morning is beneficial for health. But if you do not drink water after sweating, the risk of dehydration increases. Water and electrolytes are lost from the body through sweat. If these are not compensated for, blood flow to the kidneys is reduced, making it difficult to filter the blood.
skipping breakfast
Many people skip breakfast due to weight loss or busy schedule. This leads to a habit of eating salty snacks throughout the day, which increases the sodium level in the body. Prolonged starvation can worsen blood sugar levels, which puts extra strain on the kidneys. A balanced breakfast provides essential nutrients to the kidneys.
