A heart-wrenching incident has come to light in Raigad district of Maharashtra. On October 25, Sangeeta Namdev Mhatre, a 55-year-old Hindu woman, was strangled to death in Kudevahl village near Panvel. Police have arrested 23-year-old Mohammad Sameer Allauddin Ansari in this case, who is said to be a dairy employee by profession.
According to Raigad police, there was a dispute over money between the accused and the deceased. Ansari had lent around ₹40,000 to Sangeeta Mhatre. When he went to ask for the money back, an altercation broke out between the two. Meanwhile, the accused got angry and strangled the woman. After the murder, he stole the woman’s jewelery to make the incident look like a robbery.
Police said that the son of the deceased had lodged a complaint at Panvel City Police Station. When officials reached the spot, they found that all the jewelery was missing from the woman’s body. After this the investigation was started and the police interrogated about 30 people of the village. During this period, Ansari’s statements were found doubtful. During further interrogation he confessed to the crime.
Panvel Police said that there were no eyewitnesses in this case and no CCTV footage was available. Despite this, with the help of technical evidence, success was achieved in reaching the accused. Officials are now also investigating whether Ansari has any previous criminal record.
Police sources said that the accused had fled from the house after the murder, but was caught within a few hours. The woman’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and preliminary reports list the cause of death as strangulation.
This incident has caused a sensation not only at the local level but in the entire state. Villagers say that Sangeeta Mhatre behaved cordially with everyone and had no dispute with anyone. At present, the accused has been produced in the court, and further investigation is being conducted by the crime branch of Raigad police.
