Cricket Gully | October 30, 2025 1:39 PM CST

The Indian Men's ODI team vice-captain has survived a fatal spleen laceration and is likely to be ruled out from international cricket. Recently, BCCI secretary Devraj Saikia in an interview with the Times of India confirmed that the batter is recovering faster than normal and has avoided any kind of surgery which increased his recovery speed

However, as per recent proceedings, a report from Rev Sports has learned that Shreyas will take around two months. And this cost him the three-match ODI series against South Africa in the November-December window of 2025.

If things go well, he is likely to come back on the field during the New Zealand ODI series starting in January next year. Well, it is still hanging in uncertainty given the lesser practice opportunities.

Shreyas Iyer underwent unique interventional trans-catheter embolization

As Saikia said, Iyer didn't undergo the conventional surgery. However, RevSports said that the doctors in Sydney followed a unique method named interventional trans-catheter embolization. It is basically passing a small catheter through the arteries to block the internal bleeding. It's basically a minor procedure done in an operation theater under image control.

Shreyas Iyer suffered a lower rib cage injury on October 25, during the third ODI match against Australia. He ran back to take Alex Carey's catch but landed awkwardly on his side. Initially it looked like just another injury, but the situation got serious after he was found struggling in the dressing room. His vitals had dropped, and he was rushed to a hospital in Sydney.

Earlier reports said that Iyer is currently out of danger and has been shifted from the Intensive Care Unit to the General Ward. Sources have confirmed to TOI that he is walking in the hospital premises without support, has been receiving phone calls, and is having solid food.

Saikia said that he will be in the hospital for 7 days. His local friends have been with him. The BCCI doctor, Dr. Rizwan Khan has been there giving regular updates. Iyer's parents are currently trying to reach him in Sydney. Meanwhile, BCCI is working on bringing his sister, Shestha, who is currently in Dubai, to Sydney.
