Thai authorities have called on Israeli tourists to act respectfully while visiting the country amid growing public frustration over their behavior.
Avi Bitton, a senior adviser to the Israeli Security Council, said during a Monday meeting with Pol Maj Gen Suwat Suksri that he strongly endorsed Thailand taking swift and firm action against Israeli offenders, including those operating illegal businesses, Bangkok Post reported.
“We hope the discussion will help resolve the problem of Israeli tourists engaging in inappropriate behavior,” Suksri added.
The talks come amid mounting complaints about the behavior of Israeli tourists in popular destinations such as Pai, Phuket, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui, Malay Mail reported.
Local residents and businesses have voiced frustration over reports of unruly conduct and illegal ventures involving Israeli nationals.
During the meeting, Bitton called for increased security at these locations and pledged cooperation with Thai authorities, allowing inspections to ensure compliance with local regulations.
Tourism data shows that around 300,000 Israeli travelers visited Thailand between January and September this year, marking a 57% increase compared to the same period last year.
The Times of Israel attributed the rise to Israelis seeking respite after military service or reserve duty linked to the ongoing war in Gaza.
However, the influx has also sparked tensions.
On Oct. 14, four Israelis were arrested on Koh Samui for allegedly holding a drug-fueled party.
In May, a viral incident on Koh Phangan involved an Israeli woman refusing to remove her shoes before entering a restaurant.
In response, the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok issued a Facebook advisory on Saturday urging its citizens to show respect during the national mourning period for Queen Sirikit, who passed away last week.
The embassy advised visitors to “avoid loud music, parties or public celebrations, dress modestly, and respect the atmosphere of mourning for the next 30 days.”
