Manish Malhotra, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated designers, recently appeared on Kajol and Twinkle Khanna’s chat show Two Much, along with actress Sonakshi Sinha. Known for his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema and for designing some of the most iconic film costumes, Manish was at his candid best as he opened up about a rather awkward moment from his career, one that involved a mistaken text message to a leading actress.
Manish Malhotra once accidentally texted an actress
During the fun conversation, Twinkle Khanna brought up the incident and teased him about a time when he accidentally messaged an actress, saying he didn’t enjoy working with her. Laughing about it now, Manish admitted that it was a rare and unforgettable mistake. He explained that during the shoot of a popular film, he had meant to text his nephew, Puneet Malhotra, to say that it was the last day of shooting and that he was relieved to be done with the film. However, the message accidentally went to the actress he was working with instead.
Recounting the incident, Manish said it was the only time something like this had happened in his life. Fortunately, the actress handled the situation maturely and took it gracefully. For those who don't know, Punit Malhotra has directed three films in his career: Sonam Kapoor’s I Hate Luv Storys, Kareena Kapoor’s Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, and Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday’s Student of the Year 2.
Though he refrained from revealing her name on the show, as per a TOI report, it didn’t take long for old stories to resurface, pointing to the actress in question, Priyanka Chopra.
According to an earlier interview with Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, the mishap happened on the sets of Dostana. Madhu revealed that Manish had meant to text filmmaker Karan Johar, not Priyanka. Karan had messaged him, jokingly saying something like, “Come to Film City, it’s the last day, you’ll finally be free of her.” Manish replied in the same teasing tone, writing, “Thank God, it’s my last day with Priyanka,” but accidentally sent it to Priyanka instead of Karan.
Naturally, Priyanka was upset and even teared up on set, believing that Manish genuinely disliked working with her. When Karan realised what had happened, he immediately reached out to Manish to tell him that Priyanka was crying. Manish was shocked and quickly cleared the misunderstanding. Madhu Chopra had described it as a “big faux pas” but praised her daughter for how gracefully she handled the situation. Rather than letting the incident create bitterness, Priyanka spoke to Manish calmly, and the two became even closer friends afterwards.
Over the years, Manish and Priyanka have collaborated on numerous projects and red-carpet looks, proving that one mistaken text couldn’t shake their professional bond.
Manish Malhotra's upcoming project
On the same Two Much episode, Manish also shared another humorous memory from the early days of his career. He recalled being asked to design a “hot” white salwar kameez for a funeral scene and, unsure of what that meant, ended up making an extremely fitted outfit. Looking back, he laughed at how far he’s come from those early, nerve-racking days.
Even after decades in the industry, Manish continues to bring elegance, drama, and laughter, both on and off the set. Meanwhile, on the work front, Manish Malhotra is currently producing his first film - Gustaakh Ishq, under Stage5 Production. The film is slated to release on November 21, 2025.
