With rising fuel prices and growing environmental awareness, electric cars are becoming increasingly popular. However, since new EVs are still quite expensive, many people are turning to used electric cars as a more affordable option. But before you make a purchase, it’s important to understand that buying a pre-owned EV is not the same as buying a regular petrol or diesel car. Here are five key things you must check to avoid future losses.
1. Check the Onboard Charger
The onboard charger is a crucial component that converts AC power from the charging station into DC power for the battery. Many electric vehicles develop problems in this system over time, and repairs can be costly. Always test whether the charger is working efficiently before finalizing your purchase.
2. Inspect the Heating and Cooling System
Electric vehicles rely on systems like the PTC heater or air heat pump for temperature control inside the cabin. These components can fail after a few years and are among the most expensive to repair in EVs. Check whether the air conditioning and heating systems function smoothly.
3. Examine Battery Health Carefully
The battery pack is the heart of any electric vehicle — and also its most expensive part. Over time, the battery cells weaken, leading to reduced range or even failure. Ask for a battery health report or diagnostic scan before you buy, and avoid vehicles that show significant battery degradation.
4. Look Out for Rust or Corrosion
While modern cars are built with rust-resistant materials and coatings, corrosion can still occur — especially in older or poorly maintained models. Inspect the chassis, underbody, and joints carefully to ensure there are no rust issues that could weaken the structure or lead to costly repairs.
5. Check the Tyres
Electric cars are heavier than petrol or diesel models because of the large battery pack, which leads to faster tire wear. The braking regeneration system also affects tire life. Before buying, check the tread depth and overall condition of all four tyres — uneven wear could also indicate alignment or suspension issues.
