The way audiences watch video is changing fast, driven by the shift to big-screen viewing in the living room. The living room is increasingly becoming “the new prime time” for creators.
In understanding this trend, YouTube has rolled out five primary new tools that aim to turn any YouTube content into a best-in-class experience on TV screens while also driving discovery and making shopping easy.

This investment is driven by verifiable financial expansion. The platform verifies that the number of YouTube channels generating six figures or higher in revenue from TV screens is up more than 45% over the past year.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan publicly identified this expansion, unveiling these YouTube TV updates to enable creators to take full advantage of the fastest-growing screen on the platform. The new features address essential areas: visual quality, content discovery, channel organization, and commerce integration.
Breathtaking Visual Improvements: 4K Thumbnails and AI Upscaling
To guarantee creator content produces a strong “first impression” on the big screen, YouTube is significantly improving visual quality. In the first place, the firm is increasing the thumbnail file size by 25 times, i.e., from 2MB to 50MB.
4K-Resolution Thumbnails
This colossal increase enables YouTube not only to produce but also to deliver stunning 4K thumbnails for videos, ensuring channel branding and preview images are clear and eye-catching, even on the largest 4K TVs. YouTube is also testing giant video uploads on some creators to improve the quality of native uploads.
AI Video Upscaling
Another significant enhancement in the YouTube TV update is the introduction of a new AI-assisted tool that automatically upscales videos to higher resolution. The procedure begins by elevating videos uploaded in resolutions below 1080p – for example, standard-definition (SD) content like 360p or 480p – to high-definition (HD) quality.

The main aim is to push upscaling to 4K in the long term. This would be important for creators who have older material or videos recorded with budget equipment, so the audience is not restricted from viewing due to fuzzy playback.
Creators will have full control over their content and can choose to exclude it from these AI improvements while keeping the original file and resolution intact. Audiences will be able to look clearly and identify the AI-upgraded one as “super resolution” in settings.
Channelling the TV Experience: Discovery and Organisation
YouTube is redesigning the platform to make it more user-friendly so users can find content they like as quickly as possible and foster interaction.
Smarter Channel Navigation
Viewers now have the opportunity not only to watch but also to browse their favorite YouTube channels with interactive previews on the front page, making it easier to find content.
“Shows” Layout for Episodic Content
For authors publishing ongoing shows or tutorials, the site has refined its “Shows” layout to help group videos into binge-watching sets optimized for living-room viewing. This eliminates the need for viewers to search for the next episode.

Contextual Channel Search
Furthermore, YouTube has also made content discovery more polished with contextual search on TVs. If a viewer starts a search from the specific channel page of a creator, the search results will put that creator’s videos at the top, so this content won’t get diluted in general results across YouTube.
From Couch to Cart: Seamless Shopping
E-commerce is a massive component of YouTube viewership, evidenced by the 35 billion hours of shopping- videos watched by audiences over the past 12 months, with a growing amount of that viewing occurring in the living room.
QR Code Shopping
To convert this engagement into transactions, YouTube is streamlining the shopping experience on TV. Soon, on shoppable shopping videos, users will be able to scan a shopping QR code to open the product page instantly on their mobile phone. This eliminates additional friction points and makes it easier to act upon inspiration.
Timed Product Reveals
In addition, YouTube is experimenting with showing products at particular, scheduled moments within videos. This feature is designed to capture the viewer’s interest at the perfect moment, allowing creators to drive sales and strengthen their brands, even on the biggest screen in the house.
One Upload, Every Screen

The new features indicate YouTube’s commitment to making creator content visible on the television screen. The underlying promise is simple: creators can “shoot and upload once,” and the platform will handle the rest by making the content look good and interesting on all screens.
