New Delhi: India’s cybersecurity agency, CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), has issued a serious warning to all Google Chrome users.

The agency stated that several security vulnerabilities have been found in the browser’s desktop versions, which hackers could exploit. These vulnerabilities can affect all systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.

CERT-In has classified this as a High-Severity Alert and said that it is not limited to companies but also poses a risk to individual users.

What CERT-In’s Statement Says

In its statement, CERT-In clarified that these vulnerabilities could allow any remote attacker to execute malicious code on the user’s system, steal data, and conduct spoofing attacks. The agency also released a list of Chrome versions that are affected:

  • Linux: Versions prior to 142.0.7444.59
  • Windows and Mac: Versions prior to 142.0.7444.59/60
  • Mac: Versions prior to 142.0.7444.60

CERT-In specifically stated that these flaws pose a threat to both end-user organizations and individual users.

Technical Reasons for Chrome Vulnerabilities

According to the report, several technical flaws have been found in the Chrome browser, including:

Type Confusion – Discrepancies between data types

Incorrect implementation of the V8 engine – The engine that runs JavaScript is flawed

Extensions Policy Bypass – Security rules can be circumvented by extensions

Autofill feature vulnerability – Data theft is possible through the autofill feature

Omnibox UI security issue – Vulnerabilities in the browser’s address bar

By exploiting these vulnerabilities, hackers can remotely gain control of a system by tricking the user into clicking on a special website. This could result not only in data theft but also in the entire system being compromised.

The V8 Engine and its Importance

Google Chrome’s V8 engine is responsible for processing JavaScript. This engine acts as a bridge between computer code and website text. If there are flaws in it, hackers can easily gain access to the system.

CERT-In stated that the vulnerabilities pose the following potential threats:

  • Remote Code Execution
  • Privilege Escalation
  • Sensitive Data Theft

This dangerous situation can affect not only ordinary users but also government institutions and companies.

CERT-In’s advice: Update immediately

CERT-In has advised all Google Chrome users to immediately update their browser to the latest version. Google has released patches and updates to fix the security vulnerabilities.

Users should

  • Open Chrome
  • Go to Settings → Help → About Google Chrome
  • Install the update immediately if available

The agency warned that failure to update on time could compromise the security of users’ data and systems.

This warning proves that cybersecurity is no longer just a technical responsibility, but a primary responsibility for every user. By updating Chrome on time, we can protect our systems from hacking and data theft.
