Guwahati: Fans paid a tribute to cultural icon Zubeen Garg as his last Assamese movie, Roi Roi Binale hit the screens with screening starting as early as 4:45 am on Friday.
Fans teary eyes and applauds for the iconic singer who passed away on September 19 in Singapore. He has acted in this movie.
The first show began at 4:25 am at Matrix Cinema in Beltola, Guwahati, where fans began lining up hours before dawn. Many carried candles, incense sticks, and flowers, while a special seat inside the theatre was kept empty in Zubeen’s memory.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking from Lakhimpur said, “If I go to watch the film, the whole cinema will likely have to be shut down. My security team alone has 26 guards, and that would make things difficult for the citizens. I will arrange to watch the movie one day at Jonaki Cinema Hall. I don’t want to cause inconvenience to the public."
The film opened in theatres across 46 cities in India, including 91 screens in the Northeast - 85 of them in Assam - with over 585 daily shows scheduled for the next seven days. Nationwide, it is playing on 92 screens with over 150 daily shows.
Director Rajesh Bhuyan, overwhelmed by the response, shared his gratitude. “It’s heartwarming to see people gathering at 4:30 in the morning. For us, the greatest reward is the audience’s love. Roi Roi Binale no longer belongs to us, it belongs to the people.”
For the first time, an Assamese film is being shown in cities such as Lucknow, Pune, Dehradun, Jamshedpur, Patna, Dhanbad, Jhansi, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Jaipur, Goa, and Indore.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government's share of GST from Roi Roi Binale would be donated to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation to support medical aid for artistes, flood relief, and assistance for underprivileged students.
Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore. There are protests and demands seeking justice for Garg. The Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the death of the singer.
