Importance and health of lungs
Lungs are very important organs of our body, which help us in breathing continuously. However, their health can be seriously affected due to smoking, air pollution and harmful industrial elements.
Effects of smoking and pollution
According to Dr. Gurmeet Singh Chhabda, a pulmonologist at Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital, Faridabad, the lungs are healthy and pink at the time of birth, but due to exposure to smoking and pollution, toxic elements accumulate in them. This increases the risk of chronic respiratory diseases, lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking has a negative effect on the airways and alveoli, reducing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and causing difficulty breathing.
Air pollution and industrial exposure
Even non-smokers are not safe from pollution. Living in polluted areas can be equivalent to smoking twenty to thirty cigarettes a day. Toxic particles emitted from vehicles, factories and cooking gas accelerate lung aging and increase the risk of COPD and cancer. Asbestos, silica, and volatile chemicals in industrial workplaces also affect the lungs. Experts say it is necessary to avoid these risks.
Ways to improve lung health
Although some damage may be permanent, lifestyle changes may be beneficial. According to Dr. Chhabda, first of all smoking should be quit immediately. Regular exercise or brisk walking increases lung capacity and clears mucus. Use HEPA air purifiers and proper ventilation to improve indoor air quality. Eat a diet rich in nutrients and antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, garlic and green tea. Drinking enough water and practicing pranayam or yoga is also beneficial.
Infection prevention and health checkups
It is important to get vaccinated for flu and pneumonia to avoid infection. People above 40 years of age or smokers should get regular health checkups done. Early-stage lung cancer and other diseases can be detected with low-dose CT scans. Lung transplantation may be an option in severe cases, but timely recognition and care can enhance the quality of life.
Prevention and Daily Remedies
Dr. Chhabda says that smoking and pollution continue to cause harm. For this, wear N95 mask, use air purifiers with HEPA filters and avoid biomass fuels like wood, coal, cow dung or kerosene. Diet, exercise and water intake help increase lung function. Regular exercise improves breathing and reduces the risk of complications.
