New Delhi: New Zealands legendary batsman Kane Williamson has surprised everyone by retiring from T20 International cricket just three months before the 2026 T20 World Cup. This decision has dealt a major blow to the Blackcaps team ahead of the upcoming mega tournament in India and Sri Lanka. He scored 18 half-centuries during this time with a highest score of 95. Williamson made his T20I debut in 2011 and has captained New Zealand in 75 matches since then. He stated that “it’s the right time to step away from the shortest format to allow the team to move forward in developing new players.” Kane Williamsons Emotional Reaction to Retirement In his statement Williamson said “This journey has been incredibly special. I am grateful for the experiences and memories Ive gained being a part of this team for so long. Its the right time for both me and the team. This will give the team a clear direction in preparing for the next big goal – the T20 World Cup. There are many talented young players ready and now is their time. Daryl Mitchell is a fantastic leader who has shown the ability to take the team forward. I will continue to support this team from afar.” Williamsons Presence to Continue in Franchise Cricket Although he has retired from international T20 cricket Kane Williamsons bat will continue to shine in franchise leagues. New Zealands all-time leading run-scorer has clarified that he remains committed to playing ODI and Test cricket. His immediate focus is on the three-match Test series against the West Indies starting in Christchurch on December 2. Williamson will remain under a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket but will no longer feature in T20 International cricket. He will be available to play in various T20 leagues around the world.
