New Delhi, 02 November (Read). Vice President CP Radhakrishnan said that libraries are not just stores of books, but they are temples of knowledge, contemplation and empowerment.

Vice President Radhakrishnan, while virtually addressing the international conference ‘Libraries Empowering Communities-Global Perspectives’ organized by PN Panikkar Foundation at Kanakakkunnu Palace, Trivandrum on Saturday on the completion of 80 years of organized library movement in Kerala, said that this foundation has made a significant contribution in empowering the society through reading culture, digital literacy and knowledge. The slogan of the Foundation “Vaichu Valruka” (Read and Grow) still inspires the society towards knowledge and inclusion.

Radhakrishnan said that India has been a land of knowledge and education since ancient times. Adi Shankaracharya traveled across the country and gave the message of spiritual consciousness and unity in the society. Many sages and thinkers of India have enriched this civilization with their compassion, wisdom and foresight. He said that in today’s digital age, where there is abundance of information, libraries remain the centers of true and reliable knowledge. He said that technology provides instant access to information, but libraries promote depth, reflection and meaningful dialogue.

This two-day international conference is being organized on 2 and 3 November. Experts, policy makers, academicians and digital innovators from India and abroad participated in it. The changing role of libraries, digital access and community participation are being discussed in the conference.
