In the ever-evolving world of Bollywood many films come and go while some remain etched in the hearts of the audience; others fade away quietly but some stay with the audience even after years of their release. One such example of this is a film that was released 29 years ago and it did not hit the theatres; it hit like a thunderclap. This action drama created records and turned into one of the decade’s most unforgettable blockbusters. The film that we are talking about is none other than Ghatak. Featuring Sunny Deol in the lead this film cemented his place as India’s ultimate action hero. From his iconic dialogues like “Saaton ko ek saath maarunga” to his impeccable performance Sunny captivated the hearts of millions. At a time when romantic comedies like Andaz Apna Apna failed to click at the box office Ghatak exploded earning nearly Rs 32 crore 5 times more than its budget. Thereby breaking box office records. A Film That Took Five Years to Shape However behind this huge success were years of hard work. Ghatak wasn’t an overnight project; Director Rajkumar Santoshi took nearly five years to bring this story alive. Before Ghatak Santoshi had delivered Andaz Apna Apna with Salman and Aamir a film that despite its cult following today was a flop at release. After that he turned to Barsaat and only then began shaping Ghatak a film that would redefine Sunny Deol’s stardom and revive the 90s’ action genre. The First Choices for ‘Ghatak’ Interestingly Ghatak could have looked very different. The makers first approached Kamal Haasan for the lead role but he declined. Sunny Deol was not the first choice; even Raveena Tandon had initially been signed as the heroine. She had even done shooting for 10 days but exited due to scheduling issues leading to Meenakshi Seshadri’s entry. Box Office Success Made on a budget of Rs 6.25 crore Ghatak became a goldmine for its producers earning over Rs 32 crore. In the film sunny was seen portraying the role of Kashi the son avenging his father’s humiliation and fighting seven enemies. His dialogue delivery raw aggression and emotional depth turned him into an “Action King” of the era. The gripping story powerful action scenes and Santoshi’s impeccable direction made Ghatak not just a film but an event. Ghataks Legacy Even years after its release Ghatak remains a benchmark for 90s action cinema.
