New Delhi: Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) suffered a major blow when senior all-rounder Sean Williams withdrew from the ICC Mens T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025 just before the tournament. His sudden withdrawal from this crucial tournament to be played in Harare came as a surprise to both the team management and fans. Sean Williams Battling Addiction A statement released by ZC revealed that the 39-year-old Williams had voluntarily entered rehabilitation. Initial investigations revealed that he had been struggling with drug addiction for some time and had declared himself unavailable before potential anti-doping testing. He later admitted this during an internal investigation. Board Expresses Disappointment Questions Raised Over Discipline The Zimbabwe Cricket Board stated that every contracted player is expected to maintain professionalism and discipline. The board also disclosed that Williams record has previously been marred by indiscipline and repeated unavailability impacting the teams preparation and performance. However ZC also acknowledged that his decision to seek help is commendable. Career on Hold Contract Not to Be Renewed After 2025 Given the serious circumstances ZC clarified that Williams will no longer be considered for future team selection and his national contract will not be renewed after December 31 2025. The board appreciated his contributions to the team over two decades stating that he has provided many memorable moments and laid a strong foundation for the team.
