Yash Rathod's Stellar Performance

Vidarbha's Yash Rathod continued his impressive form in the domestic cricket scene, scoring a remarkable century against Tamil Nadu during Round 3 of the Ranji Trophy.

With this outstanding performance, Rathod has surpassed both Vijay Hazare and Vinod Kambli, achieving the highest first-class batting average among Indian players with a minimum of 2,000 runs.

Match Overview

The match is taking place at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Ground in Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu managed to reach 291 runs, largely due to a solid 179-run partnership between Pradosh Ranjan Paul, who scored 113, and Baba Indrajith, who contributed 96 runs. Vidarbha's fast bowler, Nachiket Bhute, was instrumental in Tamil Nadu's struggles, finishing with impressive bowling figures of 5/65.

Rathod's Record-Breaking Achievement

Rathod entered the game after solid contributions from Aman Mokhade (80), Dhruv Shorey (82), and R Samarth (56), who all performed well against Tamil Nadu's bowling attack. The left-handed batsman reached his half-century in just 61 balls and celebrated his ninth first-class century during the second session.

Currently, Rathod has accumulated 2,280 runs at an average of 60, placing him sixth among Indian batters with at least 2,000 runs, surpassing the averages of both Vijay Hazare (58.38) and Vinod Kambli (59.67), as reported by Wisden.

He is now the 12th player in history to score over 2,000 runs with an average of 60 or more, and notably, he is the only one among them who has not yet achieved a double century.

Current Season Highlights

Rathod's innings concluded at 133 runs, bringing his total for the current season to 775 runs across seven matches, with an impressive average of 110.7. Last season, he was the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, amassing 960 runs in 10 matches. He began this season with a strong performance, scoring 324 runs in three games while playing for Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

In the Irani Cup one-off match, Rathod recorded figures of 91 runs and took 5 wickets during Vidarbha's 93-run victory against the Rest of India. He followed this with scores of 71 and an unbeaten 101 against Nagaland and Jharkhand in the initial matches of the Ranji Trophy season.
