Winter is the perfect time to explore Britain's coastal townswith their windswept walks, cosy pubs and uncrowded beaches.

If you're looking to stick to a budget, then you may want to check out one Yorkshire seaside town that's been crowned by Which? as the best value for money in the UK.

Whitby, nestled on a stretch of cliffs where the River Esk meets the North Sea, received five stars for food and accommodation from Which? readers, as well as four stars for its tourist attractions and seafront area.

The town has long been a favourite among those intrigued by the dark and mysterious. Bram Stoker researched parts of his novel Dracula while holidaying in Whitby.

In the book, it's where the creature first lands in England, ascending the steps to the graveyard of St Mary's Church, adjacent to the ruins of Whitby Abbey. This has become a popular attraction for fans of gothic literature.

Visitors can climb the 199 steps from the harbour, just like Dracula did in the novel, and enjoy views across Whitby and out to sea.

The abbey, dating back to the 7th century, was once home to one of the first English poets, Caedmon. Today, it's an English Heritage site.

You can stroll around the well-preserved ruins before visiting the museum, which houses treasures such as medieval manuscripts and even a rare signed copy of Dracula.

Whitby, a charming seaside town, is known for its Whitby Goth Weekend, a biannual event that typically takes place in spring and at Halloween. The event features an array of activities from live music to alternative markets, with hundreds of attendees donning their best gothic attire.

The town also boasts a connection to the renowned explorer Captain James Cook, who resided in Whitby during the 18th century as a merchant navy apprentice. Visitors can delve into his life and famous South Pacific voyages at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, which is situated in his former residence.

Whitby Beach offers a quintessential British seaside experience, complete with colourful beach huts, waterfront tearooms, and traditional fish and chip shops. Along the River Esk, you'll find a plethora of attractions including the Whitby Marine Discovery Centre, souvenir shops, and amusement arcades.

For those seeking adventure, there are numerous boat trips available, ranging from serene sunset cruises to thrilling whale-watching tours.

Accommodation in Whitby caters to all preferences, whether you're after a rural retreat or a seafront stay. The White House Inn, perched on the edge of North Yorkshire Moors National Park, provides stunning sea views across the coast.

This cosy inn houses a pub offering a seasonal menu and 11 rooms, with a standard room in November priced from £90 per night.

In the harbour district, The Marine Hotel is a top pick for those wanting to soak up the town's coastal allure. It boasts a seafood restaurant serving Whitby lobster, crab, and other freshly caught delicacies, as well as seven snug rooms with rates starting from £165 per night in November.

You can even opt for a room with a balcony to savour the fresh sea breeze and stunning views.

To cap off a day at the seaside, grab fish and chips at The Fisherman's Wife on the beachfront. You have the option to dine in, with the restaurant offering sea views, or brave the chill and enjoy chips from the takeaway whilst sitting on the beach.
