morning nasal congestion problem

Nasal congestion upon waking up in the morning makes starting the day difficult for many people. Often, the need to sneeze or use a handkerchief becomes normal.

According to Dr Manusrut, ENT specialist, Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, this is a normal condition, but if it occurs repeatedly, it could be a sign of a problem to the nose or sinus. It can be easily controlled with proper information and caution.

due to blocked nose

Dr. Manusrut explains that there are many common causes of nasal congestion in the morning, such as allergies, dryness of the nose, inflammation of the sinuses, or deviated septum. When we sleep, mucus accumulates, and lying down causes swelling due to increased blood flow to the nasal passages. This is the reason why one feels blocked nose as soon as one wakes up in the morning. Even if everything is fine at night, this problem may arise in the morning.

Common Triggers That Cause Nasal Congestion

Some common habits and environment can also cause nasal congestion in the morning. According to Dr. Manusrut, dust, pet hair, mold, use of AC or heater, sleeping under a fan, and certain sleeping positions can aggravate nasal congestion. By identifying and controlling these triggers, the problem of morning nasal congestion can be reduced to a great extent.

Ways to get relief from nasal congestion

To avoid nasal congestion, it is important to keep the nasal passages clean and moist. Dr. Manusrit has six suggestions for this: rinse with saline nasal spray or salt water before going to bed and before getting up, wash bedding and sheets in hot water weekly, use dust-proof covers, keep a humidifier in the room, avoid strong fragrances and incense sticks, and inhaling steam in the morning helps loosen mucus and open the nose.

When to contact a doctor

If nasal congestion persists for more than two weeks or is accompanied by snoring, loss of smell, facial pressure or frequent sinus headaches, an ENT specialist should be consulted. Dr. Manusrut explains that this could be due to sinusitis, nasal polyps or deviated septum, which require medical attention or a minor procedure.

You will get benefits from proper care

The problem of morning nasal congestion can be easily controlled with timely medical care and proper habits. This provides relief in breathing, improves sleep quality and starts the day more refreshed. Regular habits and nasal cleaning can keep this problem at bay in the long run.
