The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will feature both mens and womens T20 cricket with six teams participating in each category. A total of 28 matches will be played marking a major step for crickets global reach and its return to the Olympics after more than 100 years. Crickets inclusion in LA28 was approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year. This will be the sports second appearance at the Games coming 128 years after its first in Paris in 1900 when Great Britain won gold in a single match against France. To accelerate the global growth of cricket ICC also said the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will have both the mens and womens T20 events which will feature six teams each comprising 28 matches in total. The Board reviewed the ICCs ongoing engagement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28) as cricket deepens its footprint in the global multisport landscape. It commended the efforts being made to include Cricket in regional multi-sport games which would mean increased participation opportunities for countries said the ICC. Each gender will have 90 athlete spots allowing countries to select squads of 15 players each. The men’s and women’s T20 cricket tournaments at the Olympics will take place from July 12 to 29 2028. The medal matches are scheduled for July 20 for the women and July 29 for the men. All games will be held at the Fairgrounds in Pomona around 50 km from downtown Los Angeles. The ICC also confirmed that cricket will be included in several multisport events leading up to the 2028 Olympics including the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya Japan the 2027 African Games in Cairo Egypt and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima Peru where cricket will appear for the first time. To support fair growth the ICC Board approved nearly a 10% increase in funding for its associate members in 2026. This extra funding will help these countries invest more in local cricket programs high-performance setups and the overall development of cricket in emerging regions. The ICC Board also approved an Invitation to Tender (ITT) for Video Gaming Rights allowing global partners to work with the ICC to create top-quality digital fan experiences. This is seen as a key step in expanding cricket’s digital and entertainment presence. Additionally the ICC has agreed to explore new commercial and innovation opportunities through a data consolidation project as part of its wider plan to create new revenue streams for the sport. The project will focus on leveraging data clusters to drive AI-powered fan engagement and enhanced analytics as well as deepen consumer understanding across the cricket ecosystem. The initiative will seek to support ICC’s Members with new commercial opportunities concluded the ICC.
