Ryan Williams, a former Australian winger, has officially obtained Indian citizenship, a significant milestone for Indian football. The ceremonial presentation of his passport took place at Bengaluru FC's camp, with the legendary Sunil Chhetri handing it over. This achievement underscores the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) commitment to integrating Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) into the national football framework.

Williams qualified for Indian citizenship through his mother's Anglo-Indian heritage. During the passport handover, Chhetri engaged him in a fun conversation about Indian street food and pop culture, showcasing Williams' enthusiasm for his new home, which has thrilled Bengaluru FC fans.

The process of obtaining citizenship involved support from various individuals, including family, friends, and the Karnataka State Association president, along with JSW. It concluded with the necessary government approvals from the ministry in Delhi. Although Williams has represented Australia at youth levels and earned a senior cap in a friendly match in 2019, FIFA regulations permit him to change his national allegiance.

Williams' football journey has taken him across several countries. He began his career in Australia with ECU Joondalup before moving to England in 2011, where he played for clubs like Portsmouth, Fulham, Gillingham, Oxford United, Barnsley, and Rotherham United. Prior to joining Bengaluru FC in 2023, he had a stint with Perth Glory in 2022.

Since his arrival at Bengaluru FC, Williams has made a significant impact, netting 13 goals and providing five assists in 46 appearances. His collaboration with Sunil Chhetri has strengthened the club's attacking capabilities.

Williams' acquisition of Indian citizenship marks a pivotal step in the AIFF's initiative to incorporate OCI players into the national team. He is reportedly part of the national team camp in preparation for India's AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, enhancing the attacking options under the guidance of new head coach Khalid Jamil.

Additionally, Nepal-born defender Abneet Bharti is also on a similar path, currently trialing with the Indian national team ahead of the Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh. His future inclusion will depend on his performance during the camp.
