The Punjab Council of Arts (PCA) has closed two theatres in Lahore for operating without valid licences, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The theatres affected by the closure are Liaquat Theatre on Multan Road and Sitara Theatre in Gajjumta, both of which had allowed their licences to expire and failed to renew them despite repeated warnings and notices from the council. Acting on directives from the Punjab government, the PCA sealed the theatres to enforce compliance with cultural and administrative regulations. “Until the theatre administrations renew their licences, both theatres will remain closed,” a spokesperson for the Punjab Council of Arts stated, emphasizing that government orders are being implemented strictly.
Sources revealed that the council has also issued fresh instructions to other theatres across the province, reminding them to renew their licences on time and strictly follow the legal framework governing cultural venues. The move signals the government’s intent to ensure operational transparency and maintain quality standards in the province’s performing arts sector. “The Punjab Council of Arts is committed to promoting cultural and artistic activities, but maintaining discipline and quality in theatres is equally important,” the spokesperson added. The council stressed that adherence to regulations is essential for the sustainability and professional management of cultural institutions.
The closures reflect a broader effort by the Punjab government to strengthen oversight of the performing arts industry, enhance accountability, and safeguard public trust in cultural establishments. Authorities said such measures are necessary to maintain a safe, well-regulated environment for audiences and performers alike. The PCA also encouraged theatre administrators to cooperate fully with officials, renew licences promptly, and comply with all requirements, ensuring uninterrupted cultural activities in the province. The government has reiterated that theatres failing to meet regulatory standards may face further action, underlining the importance of lawful and responsible operations in the arts sector.
