Non-refrigerated food products

New Delhi: Do you know that it is not right to keep all the food items in the fridge? Many common food products lose their flavor and freshness when stored in cold temperatures. From tomatoes to honey, keeping some foods cold can affect their quality. Here’s a list of 10 everyday food products that shouldn’t be kept in the fridge, along with some useful storage tips to keep them fresh for longer.

1. Tomato

Tomatoes don’t like the cold! When stored in the refrigerator, their natural sweetness is reduced, making them mushy and tasteless. It is best to keep these on the counter, where they will remain fresh and ripe for a long time.

2. Potato

Storing potatoes in the refrigerator causes their starch to turn into sugar, making them sweeter and mushy. It is better to keep them in a cool and dark place like a basket or pantry.

3. Onion

Onions should not be kept in the refrigerator! The moisture there causes them to soften and rot quickly. Keep them in a dry and ventilated place, but avoid keeping them near potatoes.

4. Garlic

Garlic loses its flavor in the refrigerator and may even sprout. Keep it in a mesh bag or container so that it can breathe. Fresh garlic can last for weeks this way.

5. Bread

Keeping bread in the refrigerator spoils it quickly. Store it at room temperature in a bread box or airtight tin to keep it fresh for a long time.

6. Bananas

If bananas are kept in the refrigerator, they do not ripen properly and their peel turns black. Keep them on the counter until they are completely cooked.

7. Honey

Keeping honey in the refrigerator causes it to crystallize. Keep it in a tightly closed jar at room temperature, and it will stay good for months.

8. Coffee

Fridge odor can affect coffee. Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard.

9. Olive Oil

Olive oil can solidify in the refrigerator. Keep it in a dark cupboard, and it will be perfect for your salads and cooking.

10. Melons

Whole melons should not be kept in the refrigerator! Cold temperatures can take away their sweetness. Keep these on the counter until you cut them.
