The official also dismissed rumours about any ICC committee being set up to resolve the Asia Cup stand-off.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that a senior ICC official is directly involved in talks with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding the Asia Cup trophy. The Indian team opted not to accept the silverware following their victory in the eight-team event, refusing to take it from Naqvi, who also heads the Asian Cricket Council.
According to reports, Pakistan’s Interior Minister has kept the Asia Cup trophy at ACC headquarters. Mohsin Naqvi wanted to personally present the trophy but it triggered a dispute with the BCCI, which was ultimately escalated to the ICC.
During the ICC meeting, Saikia held discussions with Naqvi, which the BCCI secretary described as productive, with the issue expected to be settled soon. The official also dismissed rumours about any ICC committee being set up to resolve the Asia Cup stand-off.
He assured that the matter will be settled soon, with the Asia Cup trophy set to be handed to India, and stressed that no extreme measures will be necessary.
“Even though a senior ICC official is part of the negotiation process, there’s no need for a committee at this point. The issue will be settled before the ICC considers taking any extreme measures,” Saikia told PTI.
According to PTI, ICC officials Imran Khawaja and Sanjog Gupta started discussions between India and Pakistan cricket boards.
“Certainly, if matters progress positively, the issue will be resolved as soon as possible,” Saikia said.
