Earned crores from junk
The Indian government has earned a bumper income by selling scrap in just one month. During the large-scale cleanliness drive run by the government last month, Rs 800 crore was earned by selling junk. This is more than the budget of Chandrayaan-3, which cost Rs 615 crore.
According to the report of News18, if we look at this year's figures, since the start of the annual campaign in 2021, the total earning of the government by selling scrap has been around Rs 4,100 crore. In the campaign run between October 2 and 31 this year, the highest ever till date, 232 lakh square feet of office space was vacated and 29 lakh paper files were removed. This was the biggest campaign till date, in which about 11.58 lakh offices participated.
Under the supervision of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG), good coordination was achieved between 84 ministries and departments, including Indian embassies abroad. Three Union ministers Mansukh Mandaviya, K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Dr. Jitendra Singh monitored the entire process. Between 2021 and 2025, the Central Government has launched five major cleanliness drives, which have promoted cleanliness as a system and helped in reducing the pendency in government work. In these five drives, a total of 23.62 lakh offices were covered, 928.84 lakh square feet of space was vacated, 166.95 lakh files were sorted or closed and Rs 4,097.24 crore was collected by selling the scrap.
This year, cabinet ministers and ministers of state from different ministries have been reviewing the campaign, interacting with employees and holding meetings to mitigate the grievances of the people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been appealing to the ministries to do better work in this campaign, the result of which is that the scrap has contributed well to the country's stock.
