What is the Cross-Platform Chat feature of WhatsApp?
This instant messaging app owned by Meta has been working on cross-platform messaging technology for a long time. According to the latest report by WABetaInfo, some users in the European Union have received its beta version for testing. With the help of this feature, WhatsApp users will now be able to send messages even to those who use third-party apps like Signal or Telegram. To activate it, users will have to go to Settings > Account > Third-party Chats and turn on the option.
What new will be found in the feature?
Under this feature, users will be able to send messages, photos, videos, voice notes and documents. Also WhatsApp will give two options to organize incoming chats:
- Combined Inbox: All WhatsApp and third-party chats will be visible together.
- Separate Inbox: A separate folder will be created for third-party chats.
However, features like status updates, stickers and disappearing messages will not be available in this feature. Also, it’s worth noting that people you’ve blocked on WhatsApp can contact you through third-party apps.
What is the impact on privacy and security?
Users will get the option to decide whether they want to receive notifications of chat requests coming from third-party apps immediately or to review them later. WhatsApp claims that it will not be able to read the content of these third-party chats, but these apps will have different data protection policies. Despite this, all cross-platform chats will be protected by end-to-end encryption.
Launch and availability
This feature will be completely optional. If you want, you can keep it off and WhatsApp will continue to work as before. According to reports, the feature will launch in the European Union in early 2026, while the voice and video calling feature is expected to arrive on other platforms by 2027.
