The iconic Wankhede Stadium has been shortlisted to host one of the semi-finals in the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the opener and final match to be played in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
In case the semi-finals clash between India and Pakistan is set to be played, the game will be hosted in Colombo, and the second semi-final will be held in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
With Sri Lanka to co-host with India, the tournament will be played across eight venues between the two countries. With Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad set to host the tournament in Indian soil, Sri Lanka will be using three venues.
It is understood that the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Pallekele Stadium and one of Dambulla and Hambantota will be the host venues.
However, there is no clarity on warm-up games; however, chances are Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium might get some warm-up games.
Anyways, the Indian board is yet to decide whether to host warm-up games in the Centre of Excellence (CoE) or whether they will play in Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The Indian team is expected to play in all four major cities – Mumbai (Wankhede), Delhi (Arun Jaitley), Kolkata (Eden Gardens) and Chennai (M.A.Chidambaram Stadium).
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to announce the schedule for the marquee tournament in the coming days.
In a meeting held among top BCCI officials, it was decided that this time the World Cup will be played in a few cities compared to the 2023 World Cup and each venue is expected to get at least six games each.
Considering the Bengaluru stadium, there is no clarity over availability for the World Cup because of a lack of safety clearance following the stampede incident during the victory celebrations after RCB’s maiden IPL title in IPL 2025 season.
Similarly, there is no clarity over whether Lucknow will be included among the host cities.
The Indian board has already decided that those venues that hosted the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 will be considered for the men’s tournament.
On the other hand, the ICC has made it clear to the BCCI that if Sri Lanka qualifies for the semi-finals, the neighbouring country will be playing in Colombo. And if Pakistan makes it to the final, the tournament summit clash will be played at a neutral venue.
The game between India and Pakistan will be played in Sri Lanka, after India refused to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy as per the agreement signed before.
Both the boards have agreed to play the clashes in their matches at neutral venues in ICC and continental tournaments.
It is learnt that BCCI has submitted the schedule to the ICC for the marquee tournament.
