The central government recently introduced a new security app, which aims to protect mobile users from hacking, phishing and other cyber threats. According to officials, this app not only detects suspicious activities and sends instant alerts, but also suggests recommended safety steps to the user, so that possible harm can be avoided.

The main focus of the new app is placed on three pillars—detection, alerts and risk mitigation. The app monitors network patterns, app-permissions and suspicious link-activity in the background. As soon as any suspicious activity is detected, the user gets a real-time notification and the app also gives the potential threat category (low, medium, high).

Cyber experts say this step was the need of the hour. “Micro-targeted phishing and malware attacks have started targeting ordinary users as well,” said a security analyst. “The government app aims to provide basic protection at the user-level so that people can be alerted before major losses occur.”

Some important features of the app include: suspicious URL and download blocking, app-permissions assessment, safe connection suggestions on public Wi-Fi, and suspicious call/message detection. Additionally, the app walks the user through step-by-step instructions—such as changing passwords, activating two-factor authentication (2FA), or uninstalling unwanted apps. Officials also point out that the app will receive regular security updates so that new threat patterns can be countered in a timely manner.

The government has urged users to download the app only from official sources — government portals or approved stores. Experts have warned that fake security apps may also appear in the market, which could instead become a source of data theft. Therefore, it is important to check the app’s authentication metadata and developer information.

The IT Ministry said that the app has been designed keeping privacy in mind; Personal data will be processed only upon the consent of the user and within the application. However, officials will release audits and security reports from time to time to maintain transparency on privacy- matters.
