Importance of sports and science
– Padmashree Pargat Singh praised CSIR
– A healthy mind requires a healthy body
Chandigarh: Former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Padmashree Pargat Singh has said that science and sports are deeply interconnected. Both fields require hard work, fair play, determination and patience. When scientists and researchers enter the playing field, it is beneficial for their mental and physical health. He expressed these views at the inaugural ceremony of the four-day indoor sports tournament-2025 organized by CSIR Staff Club in Chandigarh. The event has been organized by the Staff Club of Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in collaboration with CSIR Sports Promotion Board.
On this occasion, Pargat Singh said that the work of scientists and researchers is mental, for which they require a healthy brain. Sports not only promotes mental health but also maintains physical health. A healthy body creates a healthy character. These types of sporting events motivate employees to participate in recreational and fitness activities along with their professional obligations, which is essential for overall well-being and team spirit. Therefore the combination of sports and science is very important.
Padmashree Pargat Singh, who captained the Indian team at the Olympics in 1992 and 1996, advised young students to make time for outdoor activities. He shared the importance of sports and stressed the need to promote discipline, perseverance and mutual respect.
He wished all the best to over 120 players from 20 teams participating in this tournament, who are competing in popular games like badminton, table tennis, chess and bridge. He also appreciated the efforts of Dr. V. Venkata Raman, Principal Scientist and convener of the event, CSIR Directors and scientists.
The function was presided over by Prerna Puri, IAS, Secretary, Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration. Along with him, CSIR-IMTech Director Dr. Sanjeev Khosla, CSIR-CSIO Director Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Secretary of CSIR Sports Promotion Board, Dr. Anuradha Madhukar, Dr. A.P. Mitra and Dr. G.S.
