Aizawl, Nov 12: The traffic system in Mizoram, often lauded by travelers, vloggers, and social media users for its organization and civic responsibility, has received national acclaim. The state was awarded a Special Award for Traffic Management during the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference 2025, which took place in Gurugram, Haryana, from November 7 to 9.

The award was conferred by Union Minister Manohar Lal and Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Lalmalsawma Pachuau, the Secretary of the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, along with Jacob Lalawmpuia, the UD&PA Director, and officials from Town and Country Planning, accepted the award on behalf of the state government.

Held annually by the Institute of Urban Transport (India) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the UMI Conference highlights exemplary practices in urban mobility and transport management throughout the nation.

Mizoram's submission for the award was prepared by the Town and Country Planning Wing of the UD&PA Department, which included a video and PowerPoint presentation made on October 16, as per the Award Selection Committee's guidelines.

The presentation emphasized the disciplined adherence to traffic rules in Mizoram, showcasing how motorists avoid unnecessary honking and maintain a smooth flow of traffic, even in busy areas. It also highlighted the effective role of the Coordination Committee on Traffic Management, the diligent efforts of the Traffic Police, and the public's cooperation, which has led to Aizawl being affectionately dubbed the 'Silent City' by visitors.

In recent years, Aizawl's serene and orderly traffic has been prominently featured in travel blogs, YouTube channels, and national media, with tourists and vloggers describing the city's traffic as "uniquely peaceful" and a model for other regions in India.

The Award Selection Committee, impressed by Mizoram's public discipline and inter-departmental collaboration, recommended the state for this national recognition.

In a statement, the Mizoram Government expressed its gratitude, stating that this honor reflects the civic-mindedness of its people, the hard work of the UD&PA Department, and the commitment of the Mizoram Traffic Police and Transport Department. "It is through the cooperation and patience of the public that Mizoram could achieve this rare distinction,” the statement concluded.
