What is VPA in UPI and How It Works: UPI has now become the most popular means of digital payment in India. A key component of this UPI system is VPA, or Virtual Payment Address, which makes the process of sending and receiving money secure and easy. With VPA, you can transfer money to anyone without sharing your bank details. Let's learn what VPA is and how it works.
What is VPA?
VPA, or Virtual Payment Address, is a digital identity for a UPI user. It allows you to send or receive money without sharing your bank account information. For example, if someone's VPA is Vishal@oksbi, only this ID is needed to send money, not their account number or IFSC code. This makes the entire process fast, easy, and secure.
How does VPA work?
When someone makes a transaction through UPI, VPA is used instead of bank details. A VPA is linked to a bank account, and as soon as a payment is sent, it is directly transferred to the linked account. This prevents bank details from being exposed and poses no security risk. You can create multiple VPAs for the same bank account on different apps.
Easy Step-by-Step Method to Create a VPA
First, download any UPI app, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. Link your bank account to your mobile number and select the option to create a UPI ID (i.e., VPA) in the app. Here, you can choose a username of your choice, such as name@okaxis or mobile@paytm. Then, set a UPI PIN. Your Virtual Payment Address is now ready, and you can send or receive money using it.
What is the format of a VPA, and what does it include?
A Virtual Payment Address is a combination of letters, numbers, and some special characters. Its general format is username@bankname. For example, arjun@oksbi or neha@okicici. The username part is determined by you, while the bankname part is determined by the app or bank. Users can also edit their VPA later if they wish.
