Most expensive city: Mumbai tops as Asia’s costliest Indian city, living here will burn your pocket – find out where Delhi stands

Mumbai has once again been ranked as India’s most expensive city leaving Delhi behind according to a new report released on Monday. In Asia Mumbai ranks first followed by Delhi in second place based on overall expenses and cost of living. Mumbai has climbed six spots higher in the rankings this year while Delhi has moved up by two positions. As per Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living Survey Mumbai now ranks 21st in Asia for expatriates while Delhi stands at 30th among all surveyed cities. Rohit Sharma India Mobility Leader at Mercer said that despite global economic challenges India remains in a relatively strong position. Why living costs in Mumbai have gone up? The survey highlights that India’s economic growth along with rising employment opportunities an expanding middle class and overall development has pushed up the cost of living. Sharma added that even though Mumbai’s ranking has risen Indian cities still offer lower living costs compared to many global cities which makes them attractive to multinational and Indian companies looking to bring in global talent. Hong Kong most expensive city in the world Hong Kong has once again been ranked as the most expensive city in the world to live in according to the latest survey. This year Mumbai climbed 11 spots to reach 136th place globally. Delhi ranks 164th Among other Indian cities featured in the ranking New Delhi moved up four places to 164th while Chennai dropped five spots to 189th. Bengaluru also slipped six places to 195th Hyderabad stayed steady at 202nd Pune rose eight spots to 205th and Kolkata went up four places to 207th. The survey noted that Mumbai and Pune continue to be the most expensive cities in India in terms of energy prices and living costs.
